Innings of: Northants Stars
Innings of: St Michael's
Match report Diminutive St Michael's batsman Dave Tebbutt put in the bowling performance of a lifetime to dump Northants Stars out of the Garnett Cup at the first round. Describing his performance as 'the best moment of my life', Tebbutt's trundling was too hot for the Town League new boys, as his mix of spin, swing, juicy half volleys and the occasional straight one had the Stars tied up in knots. Stars batted first, and were restricted early on by some tight bowling from veteran Malc Swann and skipper Ian Geddes. Geddes made the breakthrough in the second over of the match when he had Zafran caught in the slips. The following overs were nip and tuck, with Nasir swinging the willow at every opportunity. But he swing once too often when a Tebbutt delivery 'did a little' to remove his off stump. The following over saw Dale Harrison give the umpire some exercise, with an over full of no balls and wides that saw 14 runs come off it. But the the Tebbutt bandwagon was only just starting to roll. His 6 overs netted a best ever return of 5 for 20, aided by some rather reckless batting by the visitors. In reply, the Stars soon removed Matt Collier and James Phillips with the score on 6. But Harrison, fresh from his bowling nightmare, soon restore order with an accomplished innings. Also aided by some wayward bowling that saw extras top score with 29, he guided St Michael's to victory with a solid 26 not out. A comfortable win that see St Michael's entertain either Bold Dragoon on Ecton Hall in the second round in a fortnight, Their first round game was rained off, and must be played by Wednesday 28 May.
