Innings of: St Michael's
Innings of: Obelisk I
Match report On a
cloudy afternoon, St Michael’s had their first home fixture of the season
against Obelisk II who finished 4th in the Division last year.
Obelisk won the toss and elected to field. It soon
became clear that the wicket was of variable bounce with some keeping low and
others rearing up off the wicket which had some large cracks in it. The top
order made slow but steady progress and at the halfway stage 67 had been made
with the loss of only 2 wickets with Bartley digging in for a solid 21 in 27
overs. Runs were
difficult to come by as only 6 batsmen got into double figures and with the score on
125 with 5 overs to go 150/160 seemed possible. But in the space of 3 overs 5
more wickets fell for only 13 runs and the total of 138 including 23 extras (top
score) looked 20 or 30 short of a testing target. The
Obelisk reply started steadily but in the 5th over Baker got the
breakthrough when he bowled Swann and
Geddes replaced the tired Baker and Marlow but Obelisk continued to play their
shots and progressed to 72 without further loss helped by a couple of dropped
catches and then onto 92 for 6 with Wright leading the way with an excellent 36.
However just as it seemed that Obelisk might make St Michael’s pay for their
earlier mistakes, Swann and Geddes bagged 2 wickets each in consecutives overs
to leave Obelisk short by 34 runs with Geddes getting the final wicket of Wright
with one that kept low – the pitch had the final say!
