A local raconteur and bon viveur writes.....
Lambert's five of the best too hot for
Wicken
St Michael's continued their positive start to
life in Division 9 with a healthy 46 run victory of Wicken II. Will Kingston's
limp wrist had healed sufficiently to allow him to take charge of the team for
the first time this season, where he won the toss and decided to take first use
of the glorious Brixworth track.
After negotiating the first few tight overs,
primary batter Simeon Tinant and stand-in opener Graham Mayes played freely and
confidently, putting on 76 runs for the first wicket before Tinant was well
caught at point for another platform building contribution. 'Big' Al Bartley was
run out when his titanic turning circle didn't allow him to get back after a
crazy attempted run to gully. Graham 'Brian Potter' Mayes and Ian 'Shaun
Pollock' Geddes accelerated the scoring during the middle phase of the
innings before Mayes departed for a quick fire 72. Captain Chaos Kingston then
joined Geddes to push the score towards 200, and the double century which was
duly completed with cameos from Collier, Marlow, Lowe and Cannell. Geoff Lambert
survived more than 3 balls this week and accumulated an effortless 21 not out to
boost the total to 222-9 of the full 45 overs.
| After a truly scrumptious tea
provided by the Lambert family, including scones with jam and fresh
clotted cream, St Michael's took to the field and huddled around Captain
Kingston, eager to absorb each pearl of wisdom soon to pass from his lips.
As lines like 'don't get down if it doesn't go our way' and 'stick
together no matter what' revved up the lads to a frenzy, Martin 'Gilligan'
(silly name) Baker and Geoff 'Rambo' Lambo took the new ball.
Inspired by his missus culinary delights, Lambo whipped out the first
five, four cleaned up and one expertly caught by 'Kitty' Collier
behind the stumps with a superb spell of military medium seam bowling to
put St Michael's firmly in charge. Tom Marlow continued his good work from
the week before and bowled far better than his figures suggest. (Really??)
With the game looking comfortable in the
home team's favour, Captain Chaos brought himself on and proceeded to
throw up his full range of Bertie Basset All Sorts. A combination of rank
filth and sweet pies were hammered both sides of the wicket by the Wicken
late order. Simon 'Far' Cannell, who had up to this point teased
the Wicken batters with his 80mph thunderbolts (!!??), caught the
captain's bug and served up an over of lolly that the Wicken batsmen
creamed to all parts. |

Rambo Lambo - 5 wickets |
With a hint of panic in the air, Tom 'The
Beast' Marlow and Ian 'Steve Sidwell' Geddes returned to the
attack to confirm the victory, with Geddes picking up 3 rabbits with some tail
end burglary, whilst Marlow also bowled frugally, although one ball had to be
returned via taxi from Chapel Brampton. Simeon Tinant took 2 clean catches late
on to give Cannell and Geddes wickets, and even 'Gilly' Baker got in on
the act, sprawling forward at short mid-off (how does he get himself into these
fielding positions?) to snaffle the final wicket.
Big Al Bartley, who dropped one at gully that
your Nan would have held, left swiftly without leaving the football card, which
means we have a roll over to next week, where old town league foes Spencer
arrive at fortress Brixworth. The saga continues....
